Recently, we’ve met with neighbors dealing with roach infestations, unresponsive management, and buildings with no heat. We’ve heard from West Siders who have been served eviction notices in the middle of winter, and have no place to go. Neighbors whose rent has been doubled just because they spoke out and asked for basic maintenance repairs.
West Side renters are facing incredible challenges, but if neighbors join together, we know we can build a future where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. Right now, our housing justice team is focused on three areas: organizing West Side renters, advocating for just housing policy, and expanding access to housing resources for renters. This includes knocking on doors of neighbors who have been served eviction notices and connecting them with legal aid and peer support; working to organize a West Side Tenant’s Union; and researching models for affordable and cooperative housing.
Join us! If you’re a West Side renter interested in organizing with us, please contact Cintya Canales at [email protected]. We also encourage all West Siders, both renters and homeowners, to contact your elected representatives and urge them to implement rent stabilization according to the will of the voters.
