This #ThrowbackThursday, we look back to 2020 on the West Side when we organized "Recreation as Resistance"!
Joy is a form of resistance, and in the midst of the uprisings for racial justice, we came together in Lilydale Park– a place with a long history of police violence against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) on the West Side – to spend time outdoors in community and reclaim a space that has been used for harm through joy and recreation.
The event included fishing, birding, kayaking, nature walks & sound pollution exploration, community art, and environmental science education, as well as an Indigenous (Dakota) blessing, and a Healing Circle to address violence against BIPOC in parks.
