West Siders Who Made An Impact This Year

November 2021
Unique to both the past two years, of the pandemic WSCO found a way to bring joy through virtual annual meetings, and COVID safety protocol by going to the doorsteps or locations of choice to surprise the recipients with plaques, flowers, balloons, gift cards, and a team of close friends and loved ones of the recipients. The videos debuted at our Virtual Annual Meeting, November 9th.

West Sider of the Year 2021

Deb Kinzle was awarded the “West Sider of the Year Award” for her outstanding service and years of dedication to our young people and the entire community. Deb was nominated by Debbie Luna and the Boys and Girls Club staff.

This award honors those who work collaboratively in the community with dedication to the values of the West Side. The West Sider of the Year is awarded annually by WSCO (West Side Community Organization Board of Directors) to a West Side resident, based on community nominations. Past recipients have worked with other residents on behalf of the West Side; regularly volunteered on the West Side or to the benefit of West Side residents; provided significant leadership on a major issue or activity during the past year; or made valuable contributions to the West Side.

Spirit of the West Side 2021

Congratulations to Maricella Thele for winning "Spirit of the West Side" this year! Nominated by Bri Mata, community members have called Maricella "a bright light in our neighborhood." The Spirit Of The West Side award recognizes West Siders who have demonstrated perseverance, and growth, in the face of great odds. Maricela was nominated for her passion and spirit of perseverance. She has experienced a great loss and turned that to good by her work in this year's National Night Out, and lifting up the message that our young people do not have to suffer gun violence.
