At WSCO, we believe that our vote is our voice, and our voice is our power. We have worked for many years to ensure that our neighborhood's right to vote is respected. Today, that right is under threat, and we need you to take action!
In Minnesota, there is a state law preventing cities from passing rent stabilization ordinances, unless they pass by ballot measure. Housing Equity Now Saint Paul coalition (which includes WSCO) collected more than 9,100 signatures to put rent stabilization on the ballot in St. Paul. In the November 2021 election, we won: Saint Paul voted overwhelmingly in favor of rent stabilization, passing one of the strongest protections in the country.
Now that victory is under threat. On March 10, the MN Senate is held a committee hearing on repealing the law that allows "local governments to control rents if approved by the voters." They want to take away the people's right to vote on what's best for our city. Join us in standing up for the right for all Saint Paul voters to decide our future!
Take action today: This bill may move to the House next. Write to your representative to urge them to protect the right of cities to vote to decide on rent stabilization.
Show up this month: Attend an upcoming West Side renter meeting, join us in meeting with elected officials, and show up at our housing justice rally on March 26th. More information here.
